A peek into our creative process

Leaf detail When we get together to create material, we often brainstorm and talk so fast, it’s impossible to  express and evaluate simultaneously.

If an idea or phrase is simmering in us or we’re stumbling through the exact wording, Fawn will say, “Let’s just say it; put the words out there in the air  and see what they do.”

Sometimes the words simply hover. Then we walk around them with a finger to our lips and an occasional, “Hmm,” like viewing all angles of a sculpture at a museum. Do we like it? What is it saying? Does it fit with the other art?

Other times, the words in our hearts – finally released into the air – swoop and dive and stretch their wings. They emerged beautiful and strong; a dazzling expression ready to defy gravity and rocket a fresh thought to the stars. We grin at each other and enjoy the aerial acrobatics of a well-spoken phrase or a concept keenly defined.

At still other times, we speak an idea into the air, and the words thud to the floor. Then it’s “clean up on aisle three” and move on.

Who in your partner in creative expression? How are you alike? Different?

Catching up with Stonecroft

by admin on July 22, 2010

df_kathyklag_06-10 In this picture (seated on the right)  is Kathy Klag, director of Strategic Initiatives at Stonecroft. We recently met at an area coffee shop to catch up on each other’s ministries and hear what’s new. That scorching June day called for cool drinks, so  Kathy ordered a white chocolate Italian soda and we had iced blackberry tea. Perfect.

We’ve known Kathy for years, and about the ministry of Stonecroft even longer. It’s been exciting to watch the retooling of this international ministry.  Perhaps the brightest distinctive is that Stonecroft is now the “go to” place for women who want to be equipped for ministry. Do you feel the call to serve in an established ministry? Or perhaps you are called  to begin your own? Either way, Stonecroft offers practical resources  to equip and empower you. We hope you’ll avail yourself of their support. Check ‘em out today!

International invitations: Latest update!

by admin on July 15, 2010

We received an invitation to present Keep a Smile On  Your Faith in Zimbabwe. That is now penciled in for September 2011. When we go there, Keep a Smile On  Your Faith  will be presented twice. The first time will be for women who are educated, speak English well and come from urban environments. Some have careers in business; others work in ministry. The second time will be for women who are not educated, do not speak English and are from  rural areas. We will have our first experience of tag-team speaking with a translator!

Our second international invitation is to Germany in early 2012. Keep a Smile On  Your Faith will be presented at least once to American women who are living and working or studying there. We may do additional teaching to German women with the aid of a translator. There’s also the possibility of a quick side trip to teach in Italy as well.

None of our international audiences have the funds to pay our travel expenses, and so we are keeping our “hope in the Who” to make a way. Please keep our ministry in your prayers as we move forward by faith.

What we learned on a weekend in St. Louis

July 5, 2010

The last weekend in June found us in St. Louis. (The pic at left is from our downtown hotel room.) On Saturday, June 26,  we attended a lunch and afternoon workshops hosted by AWSA (Advanced Writers and Speakers Association, of which Debi is a member). On Sunday, June 27, we gave a five-minute announcement at [...]

3 reasons why we go to rural communities

June 21, 2010

1. Few churches in rural areas have a dynamic women’s ministry.  Often a single volunteer is expected to organize everything, even though she may lack the time (or talent) to do so. 2. Budgets for special events are nonexistent. Rural churches that are barely getting by financially simply can’t host a special event. 3. Arena [...]

Flowers and Faith: How do you feed yours?

April 10, 2010

When it comes to teaching, we are two peas in a pod: happily compatible. But when it comes to hobbies, we couldn’t be more different. Fawn loves to garden and her special interest is growing orchids. The only thing Debi can grow is older. (Although there’s a bumper crop of moldy objects in her refrigerator. [...]

Great Ideas are Brewing!

March 27, 2010

“Debriefing” sounds like something an elite military team does after a high-risk operation. Or maybe something astronauts do back at NASA after a successful splash down. For us, though, “debriefing” is sipping coffee, reliving the best moments of an event and brainstorming ways to make the next one even better. In this photo, we’re smiling [...]
